Thai designer Boonmee Panyaeke transforms a crimson sea into a shawl of hypnotic elegance. She weaves a thick shawl of genuine silk, executing traditional techniques that result in the diamond patterns known as look kaew. Artisan Info: " Sawasdee Kha, my name is Boonmee Panyaeke, and I was born on 8 November 1950 in a small village in the province of Surin. Like many other kids in my village, I did not have the opportunity to study much. My parents were farmers and couldn't afford school tuitions, so at 11 years old, I started helping my parents. However, farming was done only for a few months per year, so I also began learning silk weaving with my mother. "The weaving tradition in my village motivated me to concentrate on learning. It took me about two years to be able to weave properly. Once skilled enough, I moved to Bangkok and worked for a few big silk shops. Although I wasn't paid much at first, working for them was good because I did not have enough money to purchase the raw material. However, even though I worked full time, I also had to go back to my village to help my parents during the rice planting and harvesting seasons. "When I was 24 years old, a man from my village, whom I had known from childhood, asked me to marry him. We met every time I came home and kept in touch while I was away.
