| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description In 1977 the Notre Dame Fighting Irish were off to a less than impressive start to their season. Struggling through most of their games, and posting a 4-1 record, Coach Dan Devine felt that his Notre Dame team was in need of an emotional shake up before their mid-season clash with rival USC. That shake up would come in the form of a green jersey. Devine had mentioned the jersey switch to team captain Willie Fry, who at first was not supportive of the change, but after seeing the green and gold together decided it might be just the change that the team needed. Following Friday's practice before the USC game, Tennis Coach Tom Fallen serenaded the team with traditional Irish Folk songs. One of those songs was "The Wearin' of the Green". Afterward, Coach Devine had an emotional address to his players. He spoke of the torments suffered in years past by the Irish people. He spoke of their pride. He spoke about what it meant to wear green during the Black and Tan oppression. And he reminded them of their own ethnic backgrounds, of their own ancestors, and of their own beliefs. On Saturday before the game, warm-ups were taken in the normal jerseys. However, when the team returned to the locker room before kickoff they found the new Green jerseys hanging from their lockers. In an emotionally charged game, highlighted by the new green jerseys and electrifying crowd chants of "Green Machine! Green Machine! Green Machine!!" Notre Dame turned back USC 49-19 and set the tone for the rest of their season. The Irish would later go on to beat Texas in the Cotton Bowl, 38-10, capping off an emotional season and landing them their seventh National Championship since the AP Poll had been created.
